152 Kaminishiyama-machi, Nagasaki City, Nagasaki Prefecture
Prefecture Designated Tangible Cultural Property
In the transom on the fence around the main shrine at Matsunomori Tenmangu Shrine, 30 panels (30.3 cm-high and 172 cm-wide) were carved and painted, depicting the everyday lives of Middle Age artisans, one of which is “The Sweets Making Picture.” The panels are the work of the official joiners Kihei and Toemon, and the meticulous portrayal of the artisans’ everyday life is valuable as an historical folk record in addition to being the object of high acclaim as a work of art.
