Dojindo Shrine, Kannondo Shrine and Tenkodo Shrine in the Former Chinese Quarter
2, 35, and 12 Kannai-machi, Nagasaki City, Nagasaki Prefecture
City Designated Historic Site
These buildings were erected to accommodate Chinese traders visiting Nagasaki in an attempt to prevent smuggling. The only Japanese people allowed entry were government officials, translators and prostitutes, but through these people the daily lives and culture of the Chinese in the quarter were introduced to the people of Nagasaki. The “gifts” for prostitutes given by their Chinese customers were passed directly into their hands here.
