Konpeito
Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka Prefecture
Folk Techniques
Konpeito introduced from Portugal used poppy seeds and sesame at their core, but in Japan a version that uses only grains of coarse sugar at its core was created, and this is why Japanese konpeito is made solely of sugar. Luis Frois, a missionary who came to Kitakyushu from Nagasaki to spread the gospel in Kitakyushu, first introduced konpeito in Japan when he brought it from Portugal and presented it in tribute to Oda Nobunaga.
