Fukujuji Temple is a temple of the Obaku sect of Zen Buddhism constructed by Tadazane, the first head of the Kokura Ogasawara clan, and its founding father was the Obaku priest Sokuhi Zenji, who liked sencha (tea prepared by infusing the processed whole tea leaves in hot water). During the Edo period (1603–1868) the Fukudaya shop, purveyors of sweets to the Ogasawara clan delivered confectionery to the temple.
