A Nanban confectionery that takes its name from the Portuguese word for cake, “bolo.” During the Kanbun era (1661–1673) the purveyor of confectionery to the Nabeshima Domain, Yokoo Ichiroemon travelled to Nagasaki and learned how to make it. The cakes were presented to the domain and temples during the Edo period (1603–1868).
