Meika Hiyoko first appeared in 1912 (Taisho 1) in Chikuho Iizuka, where the manufacture of confectionery was flourishing. In Iizuka, which was thriving due to its coalmining, the appearance of the locally produced three-dimensional sweet in the shape of a chick was quite unexpected at the time as all the other confectionery was either round or square.
