Nanban Orai
Iizuka City, Fukuoka Prefecture
Folk Techniques
This confectionery was produced in 1984 (Showa 59) by Sakaeya, a sweet shop opened in 1949 (Showa 24), in the image of a Nanbun ship in order to mark the days when the Nagasaki Kaido was linked by these vessels to foreign nations and the distant cities of Kyoto and Edo. The sweet is baked to bring out the taste of the butter and almonds it uses.
