This is the site of the first todera (temple established by Chinese residents) in Japan, the birthplace of the Obaku sect of Zen Buddhism and the temple to which Ingen Ryuki, who introduced the sencha (tea prepared by infusing the processed whole tea leaves in hot water) culture to Japan, was invited. With the generous sums donated by the Chinese traders who came to Nagasaki, what originated as a humble hut dedicated to Maso, the Chinese goddess of the seas, was able to build and maintain various halls.
