Nagasaki Kunchi Festival’s Hono Odori (dedication dance)
Nagasaki City, Nagasaki Prefecture
Nationally Designated Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property
This grand autumn festival is held nowadays over the three days starting on October 7 at Nagasaki City’s Suwa Shrine. The influence of the West and China is clearly evident in events held such as the Oranda Sen (Dutch ship) and Ja Odori (dragon dance). In 1778 (An’ei 7), Arend Willem Feith, chief trader of Dutch Trading Post, requested to be allowed to view the local festivities and city, in return for which it is recorded that he offered 10 kago (two to three tons) of white sugar to Nenban-cho town’s otona, the official in charge of the town. Right up to the present day, a type of confectionery called nukume zaiku is still an essential part of the decorations for the Nagasaki Kunchi Festival’s niwamise, where the tools, costumes to be used in the festival as well as congratulatory gifts are displayed prior to its start.
