Nationally Designated Important Preservation Districts for Groups of Traditional Buildings
This district flourished due to its twin features of being a post town on the Nagasaki Kaido, and a port taking advantage of the Ariake Sea. It was a logistics hub as it served as a strategic point for both land and sea traffic.
During the Horeki and Meiwa eras (1751–1772) the buildings of the Sugar Guild stood along with those of the Textile Guild, Hardware Guild and Chinese Medicine Guild. In those days there were eight shops using sugar composed of confectioners, candy shops and rice cake shops. The traditional building of the Nishi family, who are believed to have run the confectionery shop Kashiya Zenshichi for many generations, remains standing today.
